The SHOT Show (shooting, hunting, and outdoor trade) is officially underway at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. The annual event that is now in its 40th year of operation certainly has a different tone this time around. After the tragic mass-shooting that occurred at Mandalay Bay on October 1st, many Vegas citizens are left with mixed emotions as the celebrated event unfolds.
As the show gets ready to welcome more than 60,000 people to this year’s event, thoughts may turn to the victims of the Vegas massacre. It doesn’t help matters that the Sands Expo sits just three miles away from the location of the worst shooting in modern America. Midway through the week of shows, attendees will participate in a two-hour meeting regarding security issues that concern the firearm industry after a tragedy like the one that took place on the Vegas strip.
Manufacturers and dealers of firearms from across the nation routinely gather at the SHOT Show. The event is put on courtesy of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Industry members use the showcase to demonstrate the latest advancements in firearms. Nearly 2,000 people gathered in Boulder City, just outside Vegas, to test some of the new products earlier this week. Firearm accessories and equipment will be on display throughout the show.
The SHOT Show has been held exclusively in Las Vegas since 2010. Before that year, the event bounced all across the United States. The first expo was held in St. Louis, Missouri back in 1979. And since then, the show has taken place in major cities like Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, and San Francisco. The event continues to grow in size each year as a record number of attendees are expected at the Sands throughout the week. Right now, the attendance number to beat is 67,000-plus ongoers, recorded in 2014. The official number of trade members and media in attendance at this year’s expo will likely be released after the event has concluded.
